According to a new report from Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s four main political parties have come to an agreement on a new energy policy that would result in a ban of gasoline-powered car sales as early as 2025. Making the law even more interesting is the fact that Norway is currently one of the world’s largest oil exporters.
Norway already has one of the highest percentage of electric vehicles on its roadways, with 24 percent of new vehicles being powered by electric drivetrains. It would also make the country the first to make it a law to only allow zero-emission vehicles to be sold in the country.
Norway isn’t the only country considering such a move, as India has also confirmed a similar idea of making its entire fleet all-electric by 2030. The Dutch government is also looking into the possibility to ban gas-powered car sales by 2025, but the idea is still being debated by the parliament.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was understandably excited for the news, tweeting out the following message:
