How “unholy acts’ by Igbo PDP leaders robbed South East of Senate President, House Speaker slots – APC leaders

The governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, on Thursday lamented the “unholy act” exhibited by political leaders in the South East zone during the National Assembly elections, saying it has now robbed the zone of the opportunity to produce either Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives in June.
ngige

All Senatorial and House of Representatives candidate of the All Progressives Congress lost their elections in the elections held March 28.

The 15 senatorial districts in the five states, namely Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo were picked by the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party.

With the victory of Muhammadu Buhari from the North and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, from the South West, the Senate President or Speaker of the House slots would have ordinarily gone to the South East but for the outcome of the elections.

Speaking in Owerri, the Imo State capital at a rally organised by the South East APC to celebrate Mr. Buhari’s victory, Mr. Okorocha said the zone should have elected a ranking senator or member of the House of the Representatives on the platform of the party to occupy either of the positions if PDP leaders from the zone had not engineered the rigging of the National Assembly election held the same day with that of the presidency.

He specifically noted that a serving senator and former governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige or a former senator, Osita Izunaso, both of whom contested the election, would have been elected Senate President if they were not rigged out at the election.

He said, “The South East is entitled to either the Senate President or the Speaker of the Federal House. But as I speak to you now because of the unholy act of last Saturday they (Igbo leaders) have not been able to give us any ranking member of the Senate or ranking member of the Federal House.

“You cannot be a Senate President, you cannot be a Speaker unless you are somebody who has been there before. It is our plan that Osita Izunaso should go to the Senate, Ngige should go to Senate.

“Gentlemen, the truth is that one of them should have been Senate President of Nigeria. But our people, in their myopic thinking, in the smallness of their brain could not see the light and today this act of theirs has denied Ndigbo the Senate President, this act has denied Ndigbo the Speaker of the Federal House. I weep, I weep that this kind of thing can be allowed to happen here.”

Mr. Okorocha, who is a member of the APC, said political leaders in the North do not play the kind of politics being exhibited by South East leaders.

“This kind of thing could not happen in Kano, it could not happen in Sokoto,” he said.

“But here in Igbo land they use soldiers to kill their people. It is our political leaders who sponsored this unholy act and we shall hold them responsible for every blood dropped during this election.

“We know them and they know we know them. They can be having their children abroad and be killing the poor people here. We will resist it and we will say no. “

The governor alleged that the Igbo leaders that perpetrated the rigging plans wanted to allocate 1.3 million votes to Mr. Jonathan in Imo State “but for our resistance they could not do it”.

He stressed, “It is not true that anyone defeated Buhari in Imo State. He won this election in this state. The nonsense is over. We have the details of all that happened in INEC headquarters. It will be embarrassing if we show all that happened to the world.”

Speaking earlier, Mr. Ngige recounted how he was rigged out of the election in which he lost to a serving member of the House of Representatives, Uche Ekwunife, of the PDP.

He explained that one of his agents was kidnapped during the election and that the collation officers were not spared the ordeal.

He said although he lost the senatorial election, the emergence of Mr. Buhari as president-elect was a joy to him.

According to the former governor, “The only thing I want to assure you people is that you have lost nothing. General Buhari has won the election. APC will form the next national government. We are going to recover all these seats, all the allocation they gave to us. All the allocations they gave to us, they allocated to me 20 votes from Anambra Central and Buhari 17, 960 votes, for the whole of Anambra. Is it possible?

Mr. Izunaso, who is the national organising secretary of the APC, vowed to reclaim the mandate given to him by the people of Orlu Senatorial District but stolen by election riggers.

“We are not unmindful of that fact that what we produced in the South East was not a reflection of the votes of the people,” he said.

“I assure you that it is not going to take long before all those things will be corrected. Anambra results were rigged. For a man like Ngige to come third on the ladder, is this the correct result?

“In Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, results were rigged, Imo results were rigged. But I can assure you that is the end. As for my people in Orlu Senatorial Zone who voted for me the victory that you gave me on Saturday must remain our victory.

“I am not going to let any criminal to go away with the mandate you gave to me freely. Out of 12 LGAs in Orlu Zone I won in 12 LGAs and there were no elections in three zones.”

He also prayed for peace for the incoming administration of General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) “with optimism that Nigeria will witness peace and progress under his administration.”

The CAN President said, “Dear brothers and sisters, Christ died and rose once for all and for everyone; but the power of the resurrection, this passover from slavery to evil, to the freedom of goodness, must be accomplished in every age and in our nation.

According to him, the need for peace that President Goodluck Jonathan demonstrated by conceding defeat to Buhari in the recently held presidential elections should be the point of reference for all our political leaders in the coming governorship and state assemblies elections.

“Peace for Nigeria is what I bring to you in this Easter celebration; may unity and stability be restored permanently in Nigeria. I also pray for peace for the incoming administration led by retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari with optimism that Nigeria will witness peace and progress under his administration,

“May the risen Lord, the conqueror of sin and death, be a support to you all, especially to the weakest and neediest. Thank you for your support to our leaders and on behalf of my family I wish you a wonderful Easter celebrations,” Oritsejafor said.

Meanwhile, the CAN Lagos State Chairman, Alexander Bamgbola, has congratulated Christians on the Easter celebration. He said the season was a time for liberation and freedom for mankind.

In a statement on Thursday, Bamgbola, who used the opportunity to congratulate the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, said it was time for Nigerians to come together and work for the progress of the country.

While noting that the prevalent peace in the land is an act of God, he said, “Nigerians have every cause to thank God. He made it possible for us to have a peaceful election devoid of rancour and war. The atmosphere in the country has been peaceful. God has been good.”

I won’t condone looting of public treasury —President-elect Buhari

The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, has assured Nigerians that he would not condone looting of their common patrimony. He also promised to handle state resources with utmost responsibility and honesty.

Buhari_acceptance

Buhari said this while receiving a delegation of the people of his home-state, Katsina, who came to congratulate him on his election as President, at his campaign office, in Abuja, on Saturday.

He expressed his regret that the citizens had been impoverished by 16-year maladministration by the Peoples Democratic Party despite that the country received more income in the period than at any other time in the country’s history.

The President-elect said savings from his war against corruption would be ploughed into education, with the objective of empowering the citizens. A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying,

“If you give education to a man or woman, you have empowered them to be productive. There is no better way to empowerment.”

Buhari equally expressed his commitment to multi-party democracy as the best system of government, while he appealed to all citizens to imbibe courage and perseverance. These virtues, he said, stood him in good stead in bringing victory to him after failing three times in the past presidential elections.

The leaders of the delegation included the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Katsina State, Mustapha Inuwa; a former Governor of Katsina, Saidu Barda; a leading Muslim cleric; a representative of federal legislators; and a representative of the traditional institutions in the state.

US Ambassador’s diplomatic gaffe (Miscalculation or Part of the Divide & rule Plan ?)

LAST Sunday’s visit of the United States Ambassador to Nigeria to the International Conference Centre, in Abuja, where the collation of results for the 2015 Presidential election was taking place, was a brazen breach of diplomatic protocol.

It was a visit that should be condemned for what it represents: an undue interference in a sensitive and important internal affair of this country.

James Entwistle, while at the ICC, was quoted as saying that the Permanent Voter Card employed in Nigeria’s 2015 elections, by the Independent National Electoral Commission, was of higher technological value than the one in use in his home state of Virginia in the US. “I think we need to come and study it so that we can use it in my country,” he said. Although seemingly well-intentioned and commendable on its face value, that statement, to say the least, was also patronising.

While it is sometimes permissible, and indeed acceptable, to prod a reluctant country into taking actions perceived to be beneficial to the country, there should be a time to draw the line, especially on matters that have to do with the internal affairs of a sovereign state. If there are international rules and conventions governing conduct among nation states, such should be respected and applied in all circumstances. Policy options, especially on the choice of a political, economic, social and cultural system, and the formulation of foreign policy, fall into the category of matters which each state is permitted, by the principle of State sovereignty, to decide freely. It will be unimaginable for the Nigerian ambassador in the US to behave in a similar manner during an election in his host country.

This brings to mind the ongoing spat between the White House and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, following the latter’s recent visit to the US, on the invitation of the Congress. The visit was termed to be too close to the last Israeli election, and would be taken for an endorsement of Netanyahu by the American government, thus conferring an undue advantage on him over other candidates. For this reason, the American President, Barack Obama, had refused to accord him the courtesy of an official welcome.

Although there is no written law in America that says the president should not welcome a visiting head of government heading into a reelection battle, yet, there is a tradition to that effect, which Obama was not ready to break with – not even for the sake of an Israeli prime minister. So, if the Americans could go to such length to uphold their own tradition and convention, then they should also be able to respect the sensibilities of other people.

The use or non-use of the PVC attracted a heated debate before the election and it should not be an issue for diplomatic comments. Yet, it is obvious that the ambassador was only exploiting the weak institutions in Nigeria and the failure of governance to treat the country in such a disrespectful manner. Over the years, Nigeria has endured bad governance that has effectively retarded her growth and development. The country has been described as one with abundance of potentialities, but which have failed to translate into tangible benefits. A look at all the indices of development has seen Nigeria languishing in the lowest rungs of the ladder, contending with failed states such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Yemen.

Corruption has emerged as the bane of the country. Regrettably, more than two years after some Nigerians made away with over N2 trillion in an oil subsidy scam, not one person has so far been jailed. These are some of the shortcomings that countries like the US exploit to dabble in the internal affairs of Nigeria. But it should not be so.

Not surprisingly, attempts by American “experts” to analyse events in Nigeria have almost always brought out a warped and stereotyped outcome that stands facts on their heads. Their inability, or deliberate refusal, to situate the Boko Haram insurgency as part of a global terrorist and jihadist movement typifies this.

For instance, John Campbell, a former US ambassador to Nigeria, has spent a great deal of efforts misinforming the world that Boko Haram is a product of marginalisation, poverty and lack of education, despite abundant evidence to the contrary. Claiming to be an expert on Nigeria, he recently said, “Boko Haram insurgency is a direct result of chronic poor governance by Nigeria’s federal and state governments, the political marginalisation of northeastern Nigeria, and the region’s accelerating impoverishment.” He is wrong.

This is not only disingenuous, but a deliberate twisting of facts. In the first place, poverty is a common feature in almost all parts of Nigeria. Second, Boko Haram, in pursuit of its nihilistic mission like every jihadist terrorist organisation, has never mentioned economic deprivation as a grouse. Besides, in the past few years, sons of prominent Nigerians, with privileged backgrounds, have come out to openly identify with global terrorist movements, which rubbishes outright, any claims of poverty as motivation. Was it marginalisation for instance, that pushed the well educated Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, son of a multimillionaire businessman, into attempting to bomb an American airliner on Christmas Day of 2009? Was it also poverty that made the son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria to travel all the way to Syria to join forces with the Islamic State terrorists? It is also on record that Buji Foi, a commissioner in Borno State, resigned his appointment to take up leadership position in Boko Haram. That certainly does not look like an action that was driven by poverty.

The French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, was quoted as saying last month, “There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year.” Can Campbell in all honesty ascribe this to poverty and marginalisation? How come the actions of the three teenage schoolgirls that recently travelled from Britain to join ISIS were not attributed to poverty and marginalisation? Why should analyses of similar situations in different places produce different results?

False narratives such as Campbell’s explain why the US government does not consider Boko Haram terror as a security threat to Western countries. America’s position on this is summed up by the views expressed in January by James Marks, a retired major general and Executive Dean, College of Criminal Justice and Security at the University of Phoenix, who said, “The United States can do anything it needs to do to rid Nigeria of Boko Haram. It could be long term effort, but it can be done. The US has the capability, we have all the elements and power but it is not a priority.” This is regrettable.

President Jonathan's 2015 Easter message to the nation

Fellow citizens,

I greet you all, especially our Christian brothers and sisters,  as we celebrate Easter in commemoration of  the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

For Christians all over the world, the major lessons of Easter, which we celebrate this year in the midst of general elections in our nation, are to be found in the Messiah’s Divine love and glorious self-sacrifice for the redemption of mankind.

This year’s celebration of Easter is taking place at a period of very critical national choices and decisions, during which we must all be prepared and willing to make sacrifices for greater unity, peace, political stability and progress in our beloved country.

We must therefore seize the opportunity of the Easter holiday to reflect deeply on what more we need to do as a people, to ensure that the political process in which we are currently engaged is successfully concluded and that our beloved country, Nigeria continues to move towards a better future for all of its citizens.
gej

Happily, we have already successfully scaled the hurdle of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections.  I am quite hopeful that the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections will also be conducted peacefully.

To the glory and pride of our fatherland, our collective actions since March 28 have assured the world that the democratic spirit is alive and well in our nation.

By the grace of God, our beloved nation, Nigeria is moving forward despite all challenges.

Let us all pray this Easter, that God Almighty who has brought us this far, will continue to bless our nation as we  march onward towards the fulfillment of our collective vision of a truly united, strong and prosperous nation.

I wish you all very happy Easter celebrations.

Gov. election: Don’t be discouraged, Mua’zu begs PDP members

The National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu, has appealed to members of the party not to be discouraged with the outcome of the presidential election which the party lost to the All Progressives Congress.

He said next week’s governorship election will certainly provide the party a soft-landing after conceding the Presidency to the All Progressives Congress on March 28, 2015.
Mu’azu-600x330

He asked them to pick up “the pieces and ensure that we return quickly to our old winning ways,” adding that there should be no room for voter apathy, which he said was a major factor that made the PDP lost the presidential election.

He said, “While our opponents were savouring their famous victory, we should out flank them and corner at least two thirds of the states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This is not an impossible target if we return to our elements with immediate effect. We have done it before and we can do it again. Nothing will be sweeter than PDP taking Lagos, our own Rivers State and Imo.

“Our candidates in these states are first class materials who have fully penetrated the political structures of those states and are set to win.

“Our target in this remaining election should be to retain our present states and then sink our teeth into the heart of our political opponents and show that their presidential victory is nothing more than a one-off that won’t be repeated in a long while.”

He said he had reminded the party’s governorship candidates that “one thing that won’t happen in this race is the so-called bandwagon effect. The reason is simple. Our party is used to bouncing back whenever we experience a setback.”

The former Governor of Bauchi State added that the PDP in the past 16 years of democracy has maintained fair play consistently, which he said the APC admitted in its response to President Jonathan’s speech conceding to President-elect, General Muhammdu Buhari.

Doyin Okupe swallows earlier antagonism, congratulates Buhari, Tinubu

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has congratulated the President -Elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the victory of the APC at the March 28 Presidential election.

In a statement in Abuja on Saturday, Okupe also stated that the Presidency under President Goodluck Jonathan fought a great fight. Okupe was among numerous members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, who vowed that Buhari would never win the election. The Presidential aide had added that there clearly was no way the APC would not scatter earlier  to the elections. However in the statement on Saturday, Okupe swallowed all his earlier antagonism against Buhari and his party.

He said,
“Let me congratulate Gen. Mohammed Buhari on his success at the 2015 Presidential Polls. I equally congratulate my friend and brother Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader, and the leaders and members of the APC for this historic success.”

On the good fight he said the Presidency fought, Okupe said, “On our part, we have ran a good race and fought an intense and unrelenting battle from the beginning to the end. Sometimes in the course of defending our Turf the engagements have been Knuckle- breaking and often outrightly vicious.

“The fight and contest for power from time immemorial has always been fierce and intense, it has never been a sport for the Lilly-livered or the faint hearted.”

He said the Presidency was grateful to God that at the end “an outstanding President was finally recognised and accepted by a large number of Nigerians nationwide.”

He stated that despite that a  “very good, humble and great man of immense capacity has lost this election,” the Presidency “believes that God must have approved it, hence we accept it as gallant men of faith and as patriotic Nigerians and true democrats.”

Okupe added,
“President Goodluck Jonathan has done once again an unprecedented act in Nigeria. As a seating President with immense powers at his disposal, he has respected the voice of the people and willingly and freely surrendered power.

“In a magnanimous manner common only amongst true Democrats, he accepted defeat and congratulated the winner even while the final collations were still on. President Jonathan, by this singular act, stands shoulder taller than most leaders of his generation and even those before his time.”

Arsenal, Liverpool ignite Emirates

Liverpool visit Arsenal for a potentially definitive Premier League encounter on Saturday , as the runners and riders in the race for Champions League qualification embark upon the season’s final lap, AFPreports.

arsenal

Having had their 13-game unbeaten run ended by Manchester United before the international break, Liverpool find themselves five points below the Champions League spots with only eight games of the season remaining.

Another defeat at the Emirates Stadium could see Liverpool cut adrift, but victory would take them to within three points of their opponents, revitalising their quest for a top-four finish.

“In terms of the objectives going into the game, it’s no different to what it was before Manchester United, but of course we had a disappointing result and performance last time out,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

“We really want to make sure we perform and give ourselves a chance to get a positive result.”

Arsenal are seeking to record a seventh league win in succession – a feat they last achieved in March 2012 – and with Manchester City not in action until Monday, victory would lift Arsene Wenger’s side up to second place.

“It’s a big game and an opportunity for us to continue our run, which is what we want to do,” Wenger told his pre-match press conference.

“You know after the international break it’s always important that you come back and straight away you are on it.”

Mathieu Debuchy, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby are all back in training for Arsenal after injury, while Wenger said Danny Welbeck had a “little chance” of playing after hurting his knee on England duty.

Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana could both feature for Liverpool despite withdrawing from the England squad through injury, but Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel are suspended.

Raheem Sterling, meanwhile, is likely to find more than a few camera lenses trained on him after he confirmed that he has rejected a new contract offer and described reported interest from Arsenal as “flattering”.

Why I reached out to Igbo voters –Ambode, Lagos APC governorship candidate

In this interview with DAYO OKETOLA andGBENRO ADEOYE, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said he is more experienced than the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, to govern the state.

Wike planning to cede oil wells to Bayelsa –APC

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State on Thursday alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Nyesom Wike, planned to have some of the state’s oil wells ceded to Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Abia states if the PDP wins the April 11 election.
wike

Making the allegation in a statement in Port Harcourt by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, APC said Wike planned to pay N1bn monthly to the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, and some yet to be verified amount to 10 other chieftains of the PDP if elected into office.

The statement read, “This planned and unacceptable rape of Rivers State coffers, which was revealed to us by a patriotic Rivers State citizen, has made us even more resolved to prevent the emergence of a PDP-led government in our dear state.

“As a result, the APC has cut short its presidential victory celebration to step up its rescue mission to salvage the state from the misfortune that will befall it should PDP win the April 11 governorship election.”

But the PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr. Samuel Nwanosike, described the APC’s allegation as false, adding that Wike did not need to pay anybody to win the governorship election.

Nwanosike said, “The APC in Rivers State is confused. The party has run out of ideas. The APC should stop dwelling on false allegations and face the task before it.”
