Jonathan's Legacy of Change - Reno Omokri

Let me first use this opportunity to congratulate the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari. Congratulations on your hard won victory which is a testimony to your resilience. You give a new meaning to the lyrics of a song by the late US R & B singer, Aaliyah Dana Haughton, who sang ‘if at first you don’t succeed, pick yourself up and try again’.
gej

Having said that, let me say this loudly: I believe in the leadership of President Jonathan. I am proud of him. Much as it may be hard for some to conceive of now, I am certain that in the not too distant future, many will find themselves saying about President Jonathan that never in the history of Nigeria has so much being owed to one leader in so short a time as President Jonathan. Of course, I am paraphrasing Sir Winston Churchill.

General Muhammadu Buhari has won the most transparent elections ever held in Nigeria and it is President Jonathan that ensured we had this most transparent election. One only happened because of the other.

Think back to elections held before President Jonathan assumed power on May 6th, 2010. I am sure the phrase ‘do or die’ still rings familiar.

That Nigerians are today celebrating is because of what God did through Jonathan.

But perhaps President Jonathan’s greatest legacies lie in the intangible things he achieved for Nigeria.

Jonathan is the real change agent. He ensured Nigeria’s freedom of information via the Freedom of Information Law, FOI, and our freedom to choose leaders via credible elections.

Elsewhere, I have said that you may not be able to appreciate a very good wife until you have divorced her to marry another.

Even his most ardent critics will appreciate Jonathan eventually. He allowed freedoms blossom and from the way he institutionalized these freedoms, it will be virtually impossible to put the genie back into the bottle.

I have only written a few lines, yet the word change keeps popping up whenever President Jonathan’s name is mentioned.

Nigerians may have voted for change, but I am skeptical that we will see as much change in the coming years as we saw in the last five years.

Apart from the intangibles, what were some of those changes you may ask?

I will just mention a few.

In the midst of a brutal and subsisting insurgency, President Jonathan was able to lead the growth of our economy such that Nigeria became the largest economy in Africa and the 26th largest economy in the world.

He was able to reduce hunger in Nigeria (not according to any data from the government or any Nigerian run organization, but according to the International Food Policy Research Institute’s Global Hunger Index).

His leadership saw Nigerians having the highest increase in Average Life Expectancy according to the United Nations Human Development Index which shows that life expectancy in Nigeria increased from 47 years pre Jonathan to 54 years today.

For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the long neglected Almajiri children of Northern Nigeria are able to go to a physical school with modern facilities on a large and organized scale because President Jonathan built schools for them.

Our women folk have had their highest per capita input in government under Jonathan. Almost 35% of all high profile appointments President Jonathan made were for the benefit of women. He also opened up the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, to women.

The Igbo people of the Southeast, who are very mercantile and commercially itinerant, now have an international airport and do not have to travel to Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja or Kano, to take a connecting flight. They can travel out of the country directly from Enugu. Whenever they do so, President Jonathan is putting back ₦60, 000 they would have spent on connecting flights back into their pockets.

In the Southwest, the two most important roads, the Lagos-Ibadan and the Benin-Ore Expressways are wearing a new look courtesy of the change brought about by Jonathan. It is worth mentioning that those roads had been in a state of disrepair for decades before Jonathan happened on the scene.

In the power sector, Jonathan fulfilled his promise to privatize power. It may take sometime, but Nigeria is going to see the same massive increase in capacity and delivery in power as she saw in the telecommunications industry for the simple reason that government cannot do what the private sector can do and this is a fact known to every nation that has successfully solved its power challenges.

Let me not go on and on about his achievements because I can. It suffices to say that under the rain, under the sun I will be for Jonathan!

And I am not the only one. Some may sneer and say that it is because I have benefitted financially from this administration. If the incoming administration should investigate me, Nigerians will know that this is not the case. I supported President Jonathan because of passion not pocket.

Now, this Change that has been voted for by Nigerians may be good and I hope it will be.

For the vast majority of people chanting change, I pray that it will not be like a cow given to a child. That child will care for the cow as long as it is alive. The child will milk the cow, get it food and clean it every once in a while. But in many cases, the minute the cow is slaughtered and its meat is to be divided, the child then realizes who the owners of the cow really are.

I have said and still say and will continue to say that by his uncommon and statesmanly action of conceding to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, even while the votes were still being counted, President Jonathan doused the political tension in the land and took the wind out of the sails of those who may have had the means and the desire to instigate violence.

We may never know how many lives were saved by this action, but lives were indeed saved.

In my own opinion, President Jonathan deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for this gesture and at the very least, the Mo Ibrahim prize.

If we had had this legacy of conceding when Presidential elections are over, Nigeria would have been even more stable than she is right now and many many lives that were needlessly lost in previous electoral cycles would have been saved.

I am so proud of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. So, so proud!

And for the Peoples Democratic Party, its members must bear in mind that the All Progressive Congress is coming into power with control of the Executive and the Legislature and if history is anything to go by, a great deal of influence over the judiciary.

The people that are coming in are people who have tasted power before and have been away from it for far too long. They will not be shy in their use of power.

But perhaps even more impactful than these is the fact that they are entering into power with something akin to near dominance or even control of the loudest section of the media.

They have invested in the traditional media and even more so in the Social Media. Their influence over the youth is something like that wielded by the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

If the Peoples Democratic Party does not device an effective strategy that would see it increase its influence in those institutions that have traditionally been key to restraining the excesses of government, such as the media, labour and professional organizations and students and youth groups, market and road transport unions and so on, its ability to act as an effective opposition party that puts a democratic check on the excesses of the incoming ruling party will be severely eroded.

There is no time to have a pity party. What has just happened in Nigeria happens all the time in the advanced democracies of the West and even in next door Ghana. There is no shame to it. In fact, if the people involved know where they stand in the sands of time, they will understand that there is a lot to be proud of.

Those in the PDP should not go and lick their wounds. Rather they should go and build their political machinery through intellectual development and genuine reconnection with the masses at the grass roots.

Taking a cue from the behavior of the Republicans after they lose office to the Democrats, PDP mandarins should go back to school, take up newspapers columns, write books to tell their own accurate story before it is distorted, throw themselves into the lecture circuit (TED talks and conferences), set up foundations to help the less privileged and so on and so forth.

They should not worry or despair. I am very certain that history will be kind to President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP and history has a way of repeating itself.

Some may accuse me of being on a flight of fancy, so let me provide proof of history repeating itself in the democratic traditions of Nigeria.

In 1956, Enugu elected Umaru Altine, a Fulani, as the first Mayor of the city. In 2015 Amuwo-Odofin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituencies have repeated that history by electing Chief Oghene Egoh, Mrs. Rita Orji and Mr. Tony Nwoolu as their Representatives to the House of Representatives.

Those elected are all non-indigenes elected under the banner of the PDP, in Lagos state, which is an APC stronghold. Now that is Change! No. That is Jonathan’s Legacy of Change!

PDP members should not be down cast when gloaters ask them ‘how market’. What those asking that pedestrian question fail to realize is that the work of healing and uniting Nigeria must start now. There’s no time to gloat.

If they do not realize it, PDP members must realize it and begin to heal their party by building unity and infusing fresh blood into it.

Four years may look like a very long time, but it really isn’t. Remember that a party that did not even exist four years ago is about to form a government at the center. Isn’t that instructive of what proper planning and execution can do?

Mrs. Bola Shagaya denies Planning to Host Buhari's Wife - Aide

An announcement from Mrs Bola Shagaya’s kin denying late reports that she’s planning to host First Lady in waiting , Mrs Aisha Buhari to an extravagant supper.  Continue bellow.

bola

Our attention has been drawn to a false and misleading story on the social media that Hajia Bola Shagaya is planning to host a dinner party in honour of Mrs. Aishat Buhari, wife of the winner of the March 28, 2015, Presidential Election (General Muhammadu Buhari). While we hold Mrs. Buhari in high esteem and commend the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari at the poll, we wish to make it categorically clear for the records that this story is totally untrue & a fabrication. Hajia Bola Shagaya has no such plans or has she ever told anyone of such a plan to host Mrs. Buhari. It is purely mischief aimed at misleading Nigerians and disparaging her good name.

This rumour making the rounds on cyberspace has no iota of truth whatsoever and Hajia Bola Shagaya wishes to draw the attention of Nigerians to this. Hajia Bola Shagaya remains a very close confidant and friend of our amiable First Lady Dr. Dame Patience Jonathan and will continue to offer her invaluable contribution to the nation and always. We are also very proud of the heroic act of President Goodluck Jonathan making a great sacrifice to keep the peace of this nation.  We urge all Nigerians and all right thinking people to completely disregard such stories. It is false, and conjured out of envy.

You will recall that this rumour was attributed to the London chapter of All Progressives Congress to perfect this falsehood. All discerning Nigerians can understand why they planted such a story and the mischief behind it. We urge those behind it to desist forthwith.

We thank all concerned Nigerians who reached out to us to find out the truth. May God continue to bless you and the Federal Republic of NIGERIA.

Signed

Jonathan, Buhari hold 1st st meeting after election

President Goodluck Jonathan and the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, have met for the first time after last week’s presidential election.

The two leaders met behind closed-doors at the Aso Rock presidential villa Friday. Both sides are expected to commence transitional processes ahead of the May 29 date for the transfer of power.

gej_buhari

Mr. Jonathan lost Saturday’s election to Mr. Buhari, and conceded defeat, the first time an incumbent Nigerian leader would do so.

In a telephone call to Mr. Buhari ahead of his official declaration as winner, President Jonathan urged the incoming president to make time for their teams to meet and commence transitional processes.

Friday’s meeting, described by officials as “private”, held at the new Banquet Hall inside the President’s office. Details of the meeting were not made public.

Presidential Spokesman, Reuben Abati, confirmed that the meeting took place.

Militant group claims responsibility for Delta pipeline explosion

An Urhobo militant group, Urhobo Gbagbako, on Friday claimed responsibility for Thursday night’s bombing of the NPDC Oil pipelines at Ighrenene, Afiesere and Ekiugbo communities in Delta State.

gunment1

The group, which made the claims in an email sent to some reporters, said it is also planning to shut down all the oil fields in Urhobo and Isoko areas.

The email signed by the group’s s spokesperson, Priest Omodjuvwu, said the bombing of the Ekiugbo/Ighrenene/Afiesere was to draw attention to the neglect of ex-militants of Urhobo extraction.  It said the Urhobo had been sidelined in the pipelines protection contracts offered to ex-militants from other ethnic groups and they now want to show that they too had the capacity to cause trouble if ignored.

The group said it had sent warning signals to the NPDC and the federal government on the pipeline surveillance contracts, which had excluded the Urhobo.  Urhobo Gbagbako however dissociated itself from media reports about a 14-day ultimatum given to the federal government and NPDC on the oil pipeline surveillance contracts.

“We have now resumed attack on the NPDC pipeline facilities on a massive scale, which scale of bombings shall be unprecedented,” the email said.

The group said the attacks will continue until the Urhobo got what rightly belonged to them.

It explained that Urhobo Gbagbako Group is a militia group of all ex-militants, youths, women and elders of Urhobo origin.

Polls: Atiku, Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom Tinubu meet

Following the success recorded by the All Progressives Congress, its leading figures have started consultations with a view to forming an inclusive government that would take care of the various political interests within the party.
tinubu

It was learnt in Abuja on Thursday that party leaders began the process with consultations with those who contested in the party’s Presidential primaries.

As part of these consultations, the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was at the Asokoro private residence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday.

Although details of the meeting were not made public because both men met behind closed doors, it was learnt that it was part of consultations to work out modalities of filing cabinet positions.

It was further learnt that party leaders had since reached an agreement to ensure that all nominees for cabinet positions must meet strict guidelines to complement the high standard set by the President-elect.

It is however unclear when similar meetings will be held with other presidential contestants including Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rochas Okorocha of Kano and Imo states respectively.

A highly placed party member, who pleaded anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak to the media said, “ What do you expect? Our party is proactive and we want to hit the ground running by ensuring that rough edges are ironed out in good time.

“The party is run with a lot of consultations. So, it is not unusual that our leader met with another respected leader of our party privately. I do not have details of what was discussed but I have no doubt it is nothing less than how to move our dear nation forward.”

Calls to the mobile telephone numbers of Tinubu’s media aide, Sunday Dare and the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, indicated that they were unavailable as of the time of filing this report (8:05pm).

Rivers’ collation officer challenge

I want to use this platform to draw the attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission to the incident that happened on Monday at the national collation centre in Abuja.
jega1

While we can’t mock any elderly citizen for any health challenge, I think we should be careful in engaging them in such a taxing national responsibility. We all saw that somebody somewhere should be questioned on why such a person of advanced age should given such a job that demands careful watch and accurate manipulations.

I am sure the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, was highly embarrassed on what happened that day, especially with the controversial Rivers State votes. We may not be interested in questioning who employed him, but we will recommend the removal of the collation officer, and given the conflict in the Rivers polls last week, we may witness another one next week unless an urgent step is taken.

INEC should as a matter of national interest change him, and not give an impression of a nation not well-organised.

President Jonathan promotes sycophancy in his govt – Ezekwesili

A former Minister of Education and an advocate of the Bring Back Our Girls Group, Oby Ezekwesili, has said when a reviewof President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is completed, Nigerians will realise just how much damage sycophancy did to governance under the outgoing President’s watch.
Oby Ezekwesili

In some tweets late on Thursday, the former minister suggested that the kidnapping and failed rescue of the Chibok girls were samples of how a President allowed sycophants destroy governance.

The Chibok girls were abducted at Government Girls School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014 by Boko Haram militants and are yet to be rescued by the Federal Government.

“When a review of President Jonathan’s administration is done, we’ll realise how much damage sycophancy did to governance. Example? Chibok Girls,” she said.

She further elaborated on how the President allowed sycophants in his cabinet.

She added,

“A leader must be without an inordinate desire to be serenaded with ‘good news’ or their team will never let them know the true state of affairs.

“An environment that rewards sycophancy encourages team to withhold accurate ‘bad’ news (problems) from the leader while serving up ‘good news’.

” When a leader makes hero worshipping costly to those who engage in it, he/she deprives the ‘sellers’ market to set the ‘Mediocrity Benchmark.’

“A critical success factor in governance is for the leader to both in word and deed convey a culture that abhors sycophancy. No hero worshipping.”

I’ll lead massive campaign against APC – Bode George

The leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Chief Bode George, says the loss his party suffered in the presidential election has strengthened his resolve to make certain victory for his party in Lagos.
bode

He, therefore, said that he would strategise and lead an enormous campaign against the All Progressives Congress, which has been doing power in Lagos for 16 years.  George told Punch correspondent in a telephone interview on Wednesday that he would lead the campaign of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, like an army general.

He said,

“I am here and I will be at the centre of operation. The people of Lagos also want a change and we are going to be here to lead the battle. The battle is on and the people of Lagos want a change and we will ensure that we get it right.

“Lagos people know that this administration has mismanaged their resources. We are not leaving anything undone. We will reach out to the people during the campaigns.”

George said he would never defect to another party. “I will remain a member of the PDP till I leave this world,” he said.

The PDP leader denied reports that he said he would go on exile following the victory of Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential polls.

He said he would rather travel outside the country for a while in order to finish writing his autobiography, saying he had been unable to finish the book because of his busy schedule.

He said,

“I have been travelling long before now and now I need a long rest. I am 70 and I need to tidy up my memoirs and if you want to do that, you need a lot of time away from all of the hassles. But it does not mean I will no longer be a Nigerian. I have no personal grudge against Buhari or all the other people.

“We are in two different parties with different ideologies and if he is the President, I have no objection and I wish him the best of luck. The break will give me time. Rather than running up and down to Abuja, I will be there (abroad) writing my memoirs and doing other things for myself. Of course I will come back, my mother is still alive. I am not scampering out of Nigeria.”

Free S*x For Buhari: Prostitutes Beat Man To Coma For Refusing To Pay after service In Lagos

A man, Haruna Lawal landed on the hospital bed after having fun with a commercial sex worker in Ejigbo

area of Lagos without paying.
pros

Lawal had gone to a red light zone after reading online that the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes had declared a three-day free sex promo to celebrate the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in the just

concluded presidential poll.

Ooduarere gathered that Lawal, after having rounds of fun with the sex hawker all through the night, zipped up the

following morning and thanked her for ‘driving him very well’. Problem erupted when the lady demanded for her pay and

Lawal reminded her of the ongoing promo announced by the association. Angered by his submission, the lady whose name was given

as Emmanuella strangled Lawal on his neck and demanded to for her pay.

“In the process of the struggle, Lawal slapped the lady and that attracted the attention of other prostitutes in the place

who pounced on him and gave him the beaten of his life.  “He was seriously beaten because he could not afford to

even pay half of the money. The prompt intervention of other patrons saved him from being lynched,” an eye witness told our reporter on Thursday. When Gistmania visited the area on Thursday the lady, who was still angry lambasted the leadership of the association for taking a decision without consulting them.

“How can Jessy and Madam Efoyo (referring to the national president) declare free-sex without properly informing us?”,

she asked. “I only read it on the pages on newspaper. Make them, bring the money wey APC give them na. Na any politician

get my p**sy for me?” a visibly angry Nuella, as she’s called told our reporter on Thursday. When reminded that the association had already made it known that it is free sex for three days, the lady fumed, “Oya oga journalist come f**ck na, because na person get

my thing for me,” before she furiously walked away.

When contacted on phone, the general secretary of NANP, Jessica Elvis said Nuella might not be a registered member of the association. “From the report I have so far, our members have offered free service to over 7, 000 people nationwide and we are

still counting. I am sure the so called Nuella is not a registered member of the association. We will investigate and get back to you. Thank you”, she added.

Update: Kano INEC Commissioner Resident , wife, children killed in “strange” fire

Aftermath of the presidential decisions a weekend ago, Kano State’s Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Abdullahi Minkaila has been executed in a strange flame episode.

flames

The deceased was smoldered alongside his wife and two youngsters, in a flame scene , which happened Thursday night.

The late Minkaila and his family were raced to the Murtala Mohammed master clinic where they gave up the ghost at the beginning of today. Representative of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mallam Garba affirmed the scene says they couldn’t discover the genuine reason for the inferno.

Update:

The Resident Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commissioner in Kano, Mikaila Abdulahi, has died, a PREMIUM TIMES correspondent in Kano has said.

He quoted some neighbours as describing the fire incident as “strange”. Mr. Mikaila, who oversaw last Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections in the state, reportedly died in a strange fire incident at his residence on Friday morning.

Our correspondent said Mr. Mikaila’s wife, Zulaiha, and two daughters, Aisha and Asmau, were also killed in the incident.

The spokesperson of the Kano state Command of the Police confirmed the incident to our reporter. Magaji Majiya, an assistant superintendent of police, said the INEC commissioner and his family died as they tried to escape through the window of their apartment.

He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a spark in the family’s generator set at about 4a.m. Friday morning. He said the fire later spread to other parts of the house and that the INEC Commissioner and his family tried to escape through the window of one of the toilets in the building but were blocked by a burglary barrier.

Mr. Majiya said the State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, and the Deputy Police Commissioner in-charge of Criminal Investigation Department [CID], arrived the scene almost on time.

They later rushed the INEC commissioner and his family to Murtala Muhammad Hospital, where they were confirmed dead, the police spokesperson said.  While the police said they are waiting for the result of an autopsy on the remains of Mr. Abdullahi and his family, the spokesperson for the Kano state office of INEC, Garba Muhammed, said the bodies of the victims were already being conveyed to his native Dutse, the Jigawa state capital, for burial, in line with Islamic tradition.

Some neighbours, who declined to be named in this story for fear they might be harassed by the police, said the fire was strange, and suggested the police should not consider the incident an ordinary one.  They wondered why a spark from a generator would engulf an entire building and kill its occupants so fast.
