Delivering an address themed, “Made in Nigeria For the World – a Transformational Imperative,” Odumodu noted even though you can find more than 20,000 registered SMEs in the country, most products in the country cannot compete favourably in the global market because of non-conformity to standards. Odumodo said for Nigeria to attain its 2020 goal, products must manage to compete favourably at the entire world stage, noting the continuing future of Nigerian trade is based on the hands of indigenous firms.

He also stated two of SON’s laboratories in Lekki, Lagos were accredited by the United States authority, as the construction of SON’s state of the art laboratory in Ogba section of Lagos is near to completion. Odumodu further stated yet another fifteen laboratories will be constructed across the country to make certain items are duly tested and certified to meet up international standards and to make certain safety of lives of Nigerians.

Potato Farmers Get 22.5 metric tonnes Improved Potato Seeds

Consistent with President Goodluck Jonathan’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with National Root Crop Research Institute (NRCRI) approved 22.5 metric tonnes improved potato seeds to combat potato blight in Plateau State and Nigeria in general.

This is disclosed by their state Commissioner for Agriculture Nanven Steven Barko, in a one-day training workshop on modern agronomic practices on Irish potato production and pest/disease management, organised by Potato Value Chain, in Plateau State. The commissioner expressed his gratitude to President Jonathan for approving the request of their state government to import 22.5mt of disease-free, high-yielding Solana seed-potato from Germany for demonstration and trials.

“It is hoped that these efforts would go a long way to help Irish potato farmers come out of the present unfortunate situation where some farmers have lost virtually everything they had to the recent potato blight disease,” the commissioner stated.

Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Mrs Ibukun Odusote, also speaking throughout the occasion, stated the Irish potato is among the important food crops in Nigeria.

“This was what prompted the farmers’ capacity training, because if irish potato farmers can acquire good knowledge on modern best practices in potato production and pests/diseases management, it will help farmers employ various strategies to safeguard their farms against future challenges,” she said.

President Jonathan’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda has received global acclaim because of its success in repositioning the sector and moving Nigeria forward to the trail of full self sufficiency in food production.

fg Over 70 percent of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) achieved FG

FG has attained over 70% of certain requirements outlined by United Nations towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015. This is revealed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs Dr Precious Gbenol, through the pre-implementation workshop of the 2014 Conditional Grants Scheme (CGS) to Local Governments. She noted the living conditions of all Nigerians have improved through the intervention under MDG programmes.

(NBS), Dr Gbenol said the amount of people with access to clean drinking tap water has improved from 57 per cent to 60.7 per cent and individuals with good sanitary facilities has experienced slight improvement from 31 per cent to 33 per cent.

She said,

“Nigeria has achieved more than 70 per cent of the MDGs requirement. The last statistics NBS gave us was 57 per cent. This current one that the NBS is going to publish is 60.7 per cent. There is therefore a significant improvement in the number of those who have access to clean drinking water. The number of those who use good sanitation facilities has also seen slight remarkable improvement from 31 per cent to 33 per cent by NBS statistics. Nigeria has satisfied MDG 8 whose indicators say that the number of people who have access to internet facilities within the country has increased tremendously from 35 per cent to the current 55 per cent.”

Gbenol further assured Nigerians President Jonathan is resolute at ensuring the sustainable development will soon be center stage of the post-2015 development agenda.
