6 Nigerians Among Crane Crash Victims

JEDDAH: Six Nigerian pilgrims were among the 111 victims of Friday’s crane crash at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
“We lost six pilgrims — two males and four females,” Uba Mana, a spokesman for the National Haj Commission of Nigeria, told AFP on Monday. “We can’t say this is the final death toll because the situation is still unfolding. We are still visiting the hospitals and mortuaries in search of more casualties from Nigeria,” he said.
Mana said some 58,000 Nigerians were already in the Kingdom for the Haj out of 76,000 expected for this year’s pilgrimage.

Confirmed: Bipolar Nigerian Student Murdered in Georgia Jail Restraints 

A 21-year-old understudy was discovered dead and restrained in a Savannah, Georgia County Jail on New Years Day. 

For a considerable length of time, agents declined to discharge his reason for death, yet on Thursday it was declared that the reason for death was manslaughter by blunt force trauma. Matthew Ajibade, who was bipolar, was captured on abusive behavior at home charges on January 1, taking after a battle with his better half.

Nigerian dies after hard drugs he was trying to smuggle out of Indonesia bursts inside his stomach

A 25 year old Nigerian man identified as Austin Chukwuna died on Sunday May 31st after the hard drugs he was smuggling out of Indonesia burst inside his stomach.

According to Indonesian Police, Chukwuna had on Saturday May 30th lodged at a hotel close to the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Indonesia possibly with the intent of flying out with the drugs inside him, when he suddenly ran out of the hotel on Sunday morning, screaming.

Eleven killed as military foil B'Haram invasion into Maiduguri

A group of five and 6 different people were among the individuals who were killed in a firearm fight between Boko Haram individuals and Nigerian troops in Dala, Borno state yesterday May 29th. nigerian_troops
As indicated by reports, the terrorist, who came in their numbers, had attempted to attack Maiduguri, the Borno state capital however met a strong resistance from the troops positioned in the range. Numerous inhabitants were truly harmed as they tried running to wellbeing. The troops repulsed the assault.

Nigeria, United States in fresh face-off

The face-off between Nigeria and the United States over the commitment and sincerity of the US military in assisting Nigeria to fight the Boko Haram insurgency worsened within the week.
This followed an allegation by a top Nigerian intelligence source that US trainers incited Nigerian soldiers to mutiny.
The source told SUNDAY PUNCH that recent mutiny by Nigerian soldiers was as a result of the ‘negative teachings’ by US trainers, adding that it was a major reason the Federal Government stopped the US from training Nigerian soldiers on counter-terrorism.
But the US in its reaction, through the Press Attache of the US Embassy in Abuja, Sean J. McIntosh, described the allegations as baseless.

Nigeria's Ambassador to UN's husband Dies


Prof. Joy Ogwu is Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN. Her husband, Dr Aloysius Ogwu has passed on. A record issued by the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, New York, on Thursday said he died on Monday in New York, aged 77. He was a surgeon and retired as Chief Consultant Surgeon at the Military Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos. He's survived by his wife; Joy, five children, grand-children, sisters and brothers.

Nigeria’s Pension Assets Hit 4.5 Trillion Naira

President Goodluck Jonathan's reforms in pension administration have generated an important rise in the nation's total pension assets which now stand above N4.5 trillion. Director-General of National Pension Commission (PENCOM) Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu noted in just a short time frame, PENCOM recorded laudable achievements with the pension reforms and the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Body of Diepriye Alamieyeseigha's late son flown into Nigeria

The body of Oyoms Alamieyeseigha, one of many sons of Ex-Bayelsa State Governor, Diepriye Alamieyesegha, was flown into Abuja tonite October 28th from Dubai via Arik Air, on transit to Port Harcourt, as the family prepare to bury him. The 30 year old man, who had been schooling in Dubai, was found murdered there on Oct. 11th. Police initially said it was suicide but that's since been ruled out. Hopefully, the folks behind his death will soon be nabbed.

Obasanjo replies Buhari: Muslim-Muslim ticket dangerous for Nigeria

A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,   has warned political parties and their leaders against the idea of fielding either Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian as presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the February 14, 2014 election.
He said in a terse statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Sunday that such idea was dangerous given the current happenings in the polity.

Although he made no mention of any political party or politician in the statement, he appeared to have alluded to an All Progressive Congress presidential aspirant, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s comment   on Saturday that he was not opposed to a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

South Africa returns seized $15m to Nigeria

The South African Ambassador to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said in a news conference on Friday that the $15m earlier seized from some Nigerians by the South African Government had been released to Nigeria.

The South African Government had, on September 5, 2014, seized $9.3m cash belonging to Nigeria and a month later seized another $5.7m, claiming that both funds were to be used for illegal purchase of arms, reported.

However, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said the transactions were legal, urging the South African Government to stop actions that could degenerate to a diplomatic showdown.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo–Iweala, has assured Nigerians that the economy is growing positively in spite of the reduction of oil price in the international market. Okonjo-Iweala, who stated this on Tuesday at the 2014 Ministerial Platform in Abuja, said the nation was not broke as being speculated in the media.
