LAGOS - The Lagos State House of Assembly has held a public hearing over the proposed Emergency Command and Control Centre.
Commenting on the bill, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security, and Publicity, Hon Segun Olulade, explained that the purpose of the centre is to provide emergency telephone numbers for members of the public in times of emergency. He listed the numbers as 676,112.
He added that the centre is to facilitate quick and efficient response to accidents, emergencies and disasters.
Hon. Olulade asserted that safety is a very important aspect of life, explaining that both at home, out on the road, at school or at work place. He added,
Deputy speaker, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo, who stood in for the Speaker, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji said public hearing is a ritual of the House.
He disclosed that the state would construct the centre with tax payer’s fund, revealing that the most important function of the House is legitimizing.
Giving overview of the bill, Barrister Olufunke Oluwole explained that the bill is a bold step by the House in handling emergency situation.
She remarked,
She explained that it will be a body corporate, with perpetual succession and common seal. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Dolapo Odutolu, disclosed, “We must be ready for litigation when the centre is legalized”.
Also speaking, Dr. Olufemi Oke, said,
However, Mr. Author Worrey the Executive Secretary, Police Trust Fund said “When the centre is legitimatized, it can be exposed to suit because it becomes a legal entity”.
