Flood Takes Over Kano Metropolis(photos )

The poor drainage system in Kano was yesterday exposed as flood submerged some parts of the city.
The flood, which began immediately after a 45-minute rainfall, started at the time people were rushing to close from their business premises.

The flood sacked traders at Kurmi market and some residents from their houses around Yanmota in Dala area of the city as a result of a heavy rain, which started at about 5.41p.m.


Residents of BUK road by Gadan Kaya by Total filling station, Zoo road housing estate, Dan Kura Adamu street of Gandun Albasa , Kofar Nassarawa were cut off by the flood.

The flood, which some residents described as unfriendly, entered some of the houses and forcing residents to flee while others rescue those whose houses were taken over by the water along Total filing station.
THISDAY was informed that Kofar Ruwa market, Kwari textile market were all invaded by the flood, forcing the traders to flee for their lives.

A resident of Tukuntawa quarters, Malam Yusuf Aminu, told THISDAY on phone that “flood took over my entire house including the other neighborhood.”
Yusuf said: “I forced myself into my house and found that my wife and her little daughter were swimming inside the flood but I was able to rescue them.”

Another flood victim, Abubakar Jibrin Galadanchi said one of the major problems facing Tukuntawa community was the problem of flood.
Jibrin added that residents in the area can hardly move out or go back to their homes once it rains.

However, official of the state Ministry of Environment who spoke under anonymity, said the state government was on top of the situation as steps were already being taken towards addressing the problem.

He said state government under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had directed the clearing of all drainages in the city.
“I believe that what state government is doing now over the drainages will help to overcome this problem.”

The official appealed to residents of Kano to cooperate with state government efforts of dredging the drainages.
