Asabe Vilita Bashir, a member of the federal house of representatives, has urged Aisha Buhari, wife of the president, to consider making victims of Boko Haram insurgency, particularly women and children, her pet project.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Vilita, who represents Gwoza, Chibok and Damboa federal constituency in Borno state, said women and children in the northeast region had suffered severe hardship as a result of the insurgency.
According to her, some of the women had been abused by the insurgents while many others had become widows, and many children orphans.
The lawmaker, whose home town, Gwoza, was once declared a caliphate by the insurgents, stated that the special intervention of the wife of the president would go a long way towards rehabilitating and reintegrating the insurgency-stricken women and children.
“I am optimistic that the wife of the president’s special intervention in our women and children who are victims of Boko Haram insurgency will give the women and children a new lease of life,” she said.
“I must admit that both the Borno state and the federal government have been doing their best but as a woman, I believe that it would be heart-warming if the wife of the president paid special attention to these victims of Boko Haram.
“I know the wife of the president to be a very caring mother and someone who will go all the way to alleviate the suffering of other women; I believe she will come to the aid of women and children who are Boko Haram victims.”
Vilita, who is currently working on a bill to ensure all girl children are taken off the streets in the north, particularly the northeast region, emphasised that government at all levels in the north must pay special attention to girl child education.
“Enough is enough, the girl child shouldn’t be seen hawking during school hours, we must all do the needful now by ensuring that they are all in school else it portends serious danger to the progress of the north and Nigeria in general,” she added.
“All school aged children, especially the girls must be encouraged to go to school; that is the best legacy we as leaders and parents can bestowed to our children. “
