Militants Constructing Fortifications in E. Aleppo Using Locals as Human Shield

Militants from radical groups in Syria's eastern Aleppo are using local residents as human shield while erecting fortifications and carrying out constant shelling against government forces.

Since early Tuesday, aircraft stopped flying over the area as well. The militants are using the situation for their own advantage and shell frontline neighborhoods with mortars and self-made rockets.

"We cannot stop the process of construction of the enemy fortifications, as they pushed people right on the frontline. To avoid deaths of women and children there, we have suspended the work of snipers and mortars," one of the army commanders told RIA Novosti. Fighting in Aleppo has recently escalated with the Syrian army and local militia forces having managed to encircle large groups of militants in eastern districts of Aleppo. Government troops began to advance after the September 12 ceasefire collapsed. The United States has accused Russia of failing to prevent the advance, while Russia stressed that the United States failed to fulfill its commitments on separating terrorists from moderate opposition groups. Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition groups, as well as terrorist formations, including Jabhat Fatah al Sham, which is outlawed in Russia and other countries.
