Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has thrashed the United States of America government for its ‘half-hearted’ motion in helping Nigeria in the war against the Boko Haram rebellion. The Professor additionally urged the US government to quit giving reasons over its demeanor to Nigeria’s war against terrorism, Thisday reports.
Soyinka while conveying a discourse in Lagos titled: ‘Lord Nebuchadnezzar, The Reign of Impunity,’ approached the US to quit giving reasons over its refusal to offer cobra helicopters to Nigeria, demanding that the reasons were ridiculous.
The Nobel Laureate’s statements synchronizes with that of the previous military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, who additionally blamed the United States government for not being benevolent to Nigeria.
“I want to appeal to the Americans to please stop laughing at us. They should stop ridiculing this nation. The government claimed that it asked for cobra helicopters. The government of Jonathan asked for little weapons to destroy the enemies. We are in a situation of destroy or to be destroyed. They asked for the weapons even for self defence, I think the Americans should not boast of what they have done to supply assistance to vulnerable affected households. All are laudable and nobody is in disagreement with them.
“These are necessities. But this is not the response I expect to the situation of war. This nation is at war. And this nation is asking for certain forms of assistance. Please United States of America, could you please overlook the arithmetical deficiency of governance and stop giving an excuse to this government for failing to protect us. Please just say that you will not supply arms to Nigeria and leave it at that. Don’t say that you sent other things, that are not the issue at this critical time in Nigeria,” Soyinka said.
It would be reviewed that a previous Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has as of late clarified why the United States of America ought not been seen as Nigeria’s accomplice in the battle against the Boko Haram rebellion.
In the interim, the Federal Government has wiped out an agreement it had with the US for American security authorities to train a Nigerian Army Battalion, this is as per an announcement released on Monday by the US Embassy in Abuja.
Be that as it may, the United States government had at first uncovered that it would not offer cobra helicopters to the Nigerian Government to help battle the Boko Haram rebellion attacking the North-eastern piece of the nation.
Against the backdrop of upsurge in criminal activities in Ekiti State after Dr Peter Ayodele Fayose was elected as the governor, fresh facts have emerged that the trend was an orchestrated diabolical scheme for a political advantage.
Security sources hinted that the governor’s decision to cut security votes for the law enforcement agencies created a double-edge way for security breaches in favour of a larger scheme to return the state to a cauldron of fear where the government determines who to hold for these crimes and what punishments to mete to them.

Nigerian soldiers on Monday night clinched another huge victory over the extremist Boko Haram sect, repelling their attack on Konduga town in Borno State and killing at least 70 of the rampaging insurgents, security sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.
Muhammed Abbas, an official of the Nigeria Vigilante Group in Maiduguri told PREMIUM TIMES that the Boko Haram terrorists, who attacked the town at about 8 p.m. on Monday night, met stiff resistance from soldiers stationed in the town.
An apparently better equipped Nigerian military has revved up its
battle against the extremist Boko Haram sect, displacing the insurgents
from key Adamawa and Borno towns they overran and seized in the past
months, a PREMIUM TIMES journalist travelling in the area is reporting.
Another Boko Haram weapon destroyed by the Nigerian military
In what appears a renewed bid to overwhelm the terrorists, the
military, assisted by local vigilantes, known as Civilian-JTF, has
cleared most of the towns ravaged by insurgent activities, our
correspondent says.
The Nigerian military has drawn stinging criticism over its handling
of the war against Boko Haram, an extremist militia that started in 2009
by killing or abducting security agents and civilians, while also
attacking schools, markets and places of worship.
The group began seizing territories in parts of Borno and Adamawa
States in 2014, a year that has seen Boko Haram’s most horrendous
assaults.
More than 3,000 people are believed killed by the sect this year alone.
As town after town fell to Boko Haram, which busied itself shooting,
bombing and raiding communities, and slitting the throats of defenceless
residents, Nigerian troops came under severe local and international
ridicule for failing to neutralise often predictable attacks by the
militants.
In recent months, soldiers have openly abandoned their posts as Boko
Haram fighters arrived, fleeing militants they admitted were better
armed and motivated, and surrendering even additional weapons to them.
American official said in June that the situation became so terrible that Nigerian troops feared to engage the terrorists.
But things now appear to be looking up for the military, our
correspondent says, as he travels around towns seized by Boko Haram, but
which have now been liberated by the military.
“The military appears to be better equipped and motivated, and
appears to have upped its war games,” reporter Aliyu Tilde, usually
critical of the military’s response to Boko Haram, said in despatches to
the newsroom Monday.
The road to Hong still deserted after Boko Haram insurgents were dislodged by the military
PREMIUM TIMES is the first news organization to access the
heavily-guarded areas of Adamawa and Borno States, currently under
military operations.
“Gaskiya (truth be said) Nigerian military is doing a very very fine
job here. They have cleared Gombi, Hong, Mararraba, Mubi and the entire
route of Boko Haram,” Mr. Tilde said.
“They are now at Uba slugging it out. Vehicles aren’t allowed beyond
Gombi. People trek to Hong. The road is quiet. Clearing of hazardous
materials like IEDs going on along Mararraba-Mubi Road before the road
is open to users.
“Gombi-Garkida road is also cleared. It is safe. Saw many vehicles
plying the road. Clearing of Garkida-Biu road may start soon,” he said.
“The military is now better equipped and more confident. Its newly
acquired T72 tank is devastating. Boko Haram bombed it using suicide
bombers with a pickup packed with explosives but to no avail. Only
scratches. And the beast moved on.
Communities are still riddled with bullets and IEDs. The military is doing a lot of cleaning up
On Tuesday, the reporter continued his journey, talking to residents of liberated towns, soldiers, and vigilantes.
In a dispatch on Tuesday night, he wrote, “Gombi is quiet,
half-empty, on curfew today, in the full control of Nigerian armed,
police, custom, immigration forces. A camp of vigilantes can also been
seen just before the junction to Mubi.
“I trekked from Muchalla to Gombi, seen burnt cars, motorcycles and
buses of Boko Haram when their advance was checked by the military 10
days ago.
“Their last advance was stopped at Muchalla. So many bullet shells,
small and big, on the road plus signs of shelling of trees, houses, etc.
Night curfew started just now at 6pm.
“Many residents have returned although the road from Girei to this point has been nearly empty.
“Lassa and Dile exhibited the best use of self-defence doctrine.
Unlike other towns that fled on hearing the sound of Boko Haram gunfire,
the youths stood their ground and slugged it out with the Boko Haram
chaps. Within 30 minutes they cleared them although few were able to
escape.
“Boko Haram is becoming demystified gradually, it seems.
“There seems to be some change in the composition of the soldiers
here. Most of them are 30 and above, truly professionals. The incident
of begging for tips from motorists has also reduced drastically.
“We just hope they have made adequate safety arrangements for keeping the liberated towns safe.”

“I can see the drop in oil prices continuing in finitum, particularly when one considers the US now producing its own gas and oil in large commercial quantity through hydraulic fracturing – “fracking”. The US, and in the neatest future, Europe would not be depending on oil coming from the middle east, Africa, Russia and so many other countries in the world.
As a matter of fact, the US would also be exporting its own gas and oil, using the latest oil technology available to her. Besides, there are so many other energy alternatives available to the Europe and America.
Now the big question is what is going to happen to all the countries whose economies, export earnings and foreign exchange largely depend on oil?? My considered opinion is that so many of these countries whose economies are reliant on oil would be crashing so badly, if such countries have not invested itheir oil revenues in other diversified money yielding projects and programmes over the years.
Countries like Norway, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirate have been investing large chunks of of their oil revenue into prime commercial properties all over the world, world renowned banks and insurance companies, high flying international industries and in essential infrastructures within their respective countries over a period of so many years.
Some years ago, I read somewhere that Norway has been investing between 25% to 40% of its oil revenue in so many international income yielding portfolios all over the world every year for at least 40 years, and that it only relies on less than 10% of its GDP from oil revenue. Norway has the highest standard of living in the world. Lets compare Norway’s success story to Nigeria, the 6th or 7th largest oil producer in the world. Where Norway has been assiduously and wisely investing its oil revenue for the future, Nigeria and its political and business elites have been stealing and squandering the country’s oil wealth as if there is no tomorrow. Nigeria will certainly be repenting in misery, and not at leisure for wasting the black gold it had ample opportunities to use wisely!!”

Under the public-private partnership (PPP) policy of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth $3.7 million with offshore sports equipment manufacturers to establish sports facilities in about 1,000 primary schools across the nation.
The MoU was signed between the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLFT) and China Sports International Corporation Limited and CAAN Sports Organization Limited, Turkey.
The Minister of Special Duties and International Government Affairs Kabiru Turaki noted that the project will increase the nation’s talent base, as nine primary schools in each senatorial district across the six-geopolitical zones in the country will benefit from the project.
According to the Executive Secretary of the NLTF, Engr. Habu Gumel, the pact signed with the China firm was worth $2.8m, while the one with Turkey Company was $914, 967, adding that money for the deal was generated from lottery activities. “The contracts involve the supply of various branded sports equipment covering nine types of sports designed for primary schools, namely; athletics, volleyball, football, handball, badminton, table tennis, basketball, judo and Taekwondo,” he said.
