Abortion cases in Nigeria soars, increase by 640,000 – Study

Notwithstanding being exceedingly confined, the instances of abortion in Nigeria somewhere around 1996 and 2012 expanded by 640,000, another study conducted by researchers at the Guttmacher Institute and the University of Ibadan has shown.

The study which is titled, ‘The rate of fetus removal in Nigeria,’ uncovered that 1.25 million abortions were performed in Nigeria in 2012, interestingly with 610,000 abortions evaluated to have happened in the nation in 1996.

It noted that the increment in abortions was not just because of the nation’s more prominent populace size, additionally as an aftereffect of an evident ascent in abortions rate, including that the majority of them were perilous.

The study’s lead author and Director of International Research, Guttmacher Institute, Dr. Akinrinola Bankole, expressed that in spite of the fact that abortions was allowed just when important to spare a lady’s life, its induced form was common in Nigeria.

Bankole, who talked at a event in Abuja on Wednesday, expressed that the assessed rate was 33 abortions for every 1,000 ladies matured 15 to 49 years in 2012.

He said, “Although this rate is greater than the 23 abortions per 1,000 women rate estimated in a previous study in 1996, the most prudent conclusion may be that the abortion rate has increased slightly, as the two rates were calculated using different approaches.”

The study noted that most of the abortions were clandestine and many were unsafe.  This, it said, was a major contributor to Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate, which was among the highest in the world.

Bankole said, “These findings make clear not only that abortion is common in Nigeria, but unsafe services are putting women’s health and lives at risk. Clandestine procedures are often carried out under unsanitary conditions by providers who are not appropriately trained. The resulting complications range from unchecked bleeding to serious infections and even death.”

On measures adopted for the study, he noted that a widely used indirect methodology was undertaken to estimate the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy in Nigeria in 2012.

According to the study’s lead author, data on provision of abortion and post-abortion care were collected from a nationally representative sample of 772 health facilities.

Bankole stated that estimates of the likelihood that women who had unsafe abortion experience, complications and obtained treatment were collected from 194 health care professionals with a broad understanding of the abortion context in Nigeria.

“Results from findings showed that an estimated 1.25 million induced abortions occurred in Nigeria in 2012, equivalent to a rate of 33 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 49,” he said.

While a lot of people have a bitter-sweet relationship with the law enforcers, most concede the indispensable part the police play in securing lives and property. Which is the reason Nigerians need to engage with them to protect the nation.

Stop when a Nigerian Policeman flags you

Policemen have the right to stop and search anyone by virtue of being a law enforcement agency. So, whenever a policeman flags you to a stop, do not hesitate to hit the brakes. Before setting out on your journey, ensure your car particulars are up-to-date and you have a fire extinguisher as well. This will not give them a loophole to exploit. However, ensure that you watch them with an eagle eye so that they will not implicate you.

Speak Foreign Language or English

Pidgin English’ otherwise known as vernacular is the easiest way a policeman can communicate with you. With this knowledge, when interacting with them, reply the policeman in English. This will make it easier for them to let you go. They will even think you are a lawyer. However, do not allow your ‘big grammar’ to get you into trouble.

Don’t argue with a gun-wielding policeman

In a buzzing city like Port Harcourt, you do not want anyone to waste time. A police intrusion on a Monday morning is unwelcome by many commuters. Hence, the tendency to argue with a policeman especially a gun-wielding one is possible. It is better you allow them humiliate you rather than argue with them. What you should do is to memorize the policeman’s tag number and report him to a superior officer. But if you do otherwise, the outcome may be nasty.
Know your right

Ignorance is not an excuse under the law. So, try as much as possible to know your right and privileges. It will really come handy when a policeman is attempting to be smart by referencing or quoting non-existent laws. If you are not a lawyer, you will definitely fall for this. Your car may be tolled or you may end up offering a tip to the policeman. At the very least, know the necessary documents to share with share with the police when flagged down.

3 Ways to Groom Sporting Talents for Nigeria

Nigeria is a country replete with sporting talents however, the country is yet to aggregate these talents into medal-winning performances at international sports events.

The few young talents that have found themselves at the top have done it through their own hard work, relied on luck with little or no government support and it is adversely affecting our medal hopes at both local and international events. Jovago.com, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares 5 tips for grooming sports talents for Nigeria’s teams be it athletics, gymnastics, football and other sports.

Academy

Academies are littered all of Lagos and Port Harcourt where young talents are groomed for different sports in Nigeria. An interesting twist has been introduced in the grooming of talents by combining sports and education. This is because there is life after sports as some Nigerians sports personalities live in penury despite excelling in their chosen sports. Sports official can visit these academies to poach talents for the team or attend sporting events to identify new talents.

Talents Youth Athletics

Focus on other sports aside Football

Football is no doubt the king of sports. In Nigeria, a visit to the various viewing centres at the weekend will offer a clear picture of the passion of Nigerians for football. However, the over-reliance on football is affecting other sports. So much Monies are pumped into football and we are yet to get any tangible results. If this trend continues, other sports will suffer and sports talents will have little opportunities to succeed because of lack of opportunities.

Training and personal development

Nigerians virtually self-fund everything they need shelter, security, water, meanwhile the government play little role in providing these amenities. Hence, many Nigerians have decided not to wait for the government. This is same with sports talent. Waiting for the government may be a futile effort. Therefore, personal development and training is advisable. Blessing Okagbare is a very good example. Now that she’s an athletics star, she is now the golden girl of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
