The first confirmed Ebola patient in Mali, a 2-year-old girl, has died, CNN reported.
The child, who recently arrived to Mali from Guinea, was diagnosed with Ebola Thursday. She died Friday, according to CNN.
On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the girl was exposed to many other people who could have contacted the virus from her even though they showed no Ebola symptoms yet. Ebola's incubation period is up to 21 days.
The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. The current Ebola outbreak began in southern Guinea in the beginning of this year and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal.
According to WHO, 4,877 people have lost their lives to Ebola, with 9,936 confirmed, likely and suspected cases having been reported in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Spain and the United States.
