Ivory Coast Bans Skin-Whitening Cream, Says It Causes Cancer, Diabetes

In what can be described as a very terrible news for those young women – and some men – planning to embrace the new trend of bleaching, as well as others already buried in it, the government of Ivory Coast has banned skin-whitening creams across the West African country.
cancer

According to the health ministry, this decision was made because of health concerns.

It says “cosmetic lightening and hygiene creams… that de-pigment the skin… are now forbidden”.

Medical experts who spoke with news agency, AFP, say they may cause cancer, diabetes, severe skin conditions and other diseases.

“The number of people with side-effects caused by these medicines is really high,” Christian Doudouko, a member of Ivory Coast’s pharmaceutical authority, was quoted as saying by the outfit.

However, analysts say the ban may not stop people buying the products.

They are still used in The Gambia despite a ban, BBC reports.

A study carried out by UN Environment Programme in 2008 reveals that the use of whitening creams in Africa is most widespread in Nigeria – where more than 75% of women buy them.

Photo: Christian Catholic Church Temporarily Transformed into Mosque in Venice Muslim Festival

The Catholic church of Santa Maria della Misericordia in Venice has been provisionally transformed into a mosque for the seven-month period of the Biennale festivities in the northern Italian city.

venezia_scuola_misericor

Swiss-Icelandic artist Christian Büchel rented out the church, which is now owned by a lighting company, for his art project titled “The Mosque: The First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice.” The artist was chosen to represent his new homeland of Iceland for the celebrations and his mosque will become Iceland’s official national pavilion for the 56thVenice Biennale Festival.

Though the festival doesn’t begin until next November 22, the new mosque was inaugurated Friday morning with a ceremony including Friday prayers by dozens of Muslims.

The originally Byzantine church, restored in 1864, has not functioned as a Christian church for over forty years, ever since it was acquired by private owners. Büchel, who is married to an Icelandic woman and has been a citizen there for seven years, redecorated the interior of the church in every detail according to Islamic standards. He adorned the walls with baroque Arabic script, covered the floor with a prayer carpet facing Mecca, hung mosque lamps and installed a mihrab where the crucifix had been.

The artist, who won the “Hugo Boss Prize” for contemporary art, is known for his provocative work and his barbed criticisms of war, poverty, capitalism, US hegemony and globalization. He sees the Venice Mosque project as a protest against “Islamophobia.”

“We are proud to support THE MOSQUE, Iceland’s contribution to the Biennale,” Sverrir Agnarsson, the president of the Muslim Community of Iceland, said in a statement released to press. “It is particularly fitting that this project coincides with the campaign to construct the first mosque in Reykjavik. In the past, prejudice and political pressures in both Iceland and Italy made it impossible to imagine mosques in either place.”

Local Muslims as well as the Islamic community of Iceland have worked together with Büchel in preparing the installation in Venice.

Muslim leaders said they saw the proposal to create a temporary mosque at the forefront of the Biennale celebrations as a perfect way to communicate their desire to participate more actively in the life of their city, which has never had a mosque.

“Sometimes you need to show yourself, to show that you are peaceful and you want people to see your culture,” said Mohamed Amin Al Ahdab, president of the Venetian Islamic community, representing the Muslims of 30 nationalities living in Venice.

Hamad Mahamed, a local imam, was involved in the planning and will serve as the leader of the mosque. He arrived during the last preparations and led the prayer for a small group of Muslim men who were there to help.

Since the work was billed as an art installation rather than a place of worship, building permits were obtained with relative ease. Conflicting reports left unclear whether the pavilion will be used by the faithful for regular worship as a real mosque. The Venice Municipality has stated that it authorized no place of worship but a work of art.

Police and officials of the Biennale informed Büchel that he would not be allowed to make several proposed changes outside the church, including a bas-relief that he had planned near the entrance that would have read “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) in Arabic.

Terrible! Man's Semen Stolen After Being Molested At Gunpoint By 3 Women

A man was kidnapped at gunpoint in South Africa and molested by three women who collected his semen in a cool box before abandoning their victim – and the method is part of a growing trend.
wow

The 33-year-old man gave the women directions when they pulled up in a black BMW. Suddenly, one of the women armed with a gun got out and forced him into the back of the car at gunpoint.

The trio then drove him 500km away and fondled him in the back of the car but he did not become aroused, so they forced him to drink an ‘unknown substance’ from a bottle to aid him.

They then molested the man repeatedly and collected his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler  box. The man was then kicked out of the car, 500 km away from where they picked him up in the Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with the stolen sperm.  The exact same method is being used by women in Gauteng, who are also forcing men to drink from a bottle and stealing their semen but no arrests have been made.

Sowetan Live reports that Constable Mncedi Mbombo said:

‘As he was busy pointing out the directions, one lady came out and pointed a gun at him and forced him into the car.

‘They drove into a thoroughfare 500km away. They parked the car and fondled him to get an erection but his peen could not get erect. They then forced him to drink an unknown substance from a bottle. This got him aroused quickly even though he was still scared and didn’t want to have sex.
This is really confusing to us because we have never heard of such a thing before. The man was fully conscious throughout his ordeal and he is still traumatised.’

Police have now opened a rape investigation.

Nigerian Father [Martin Ogazi] Beats Up A Football Coach For Not Supporting His Son's Team

A Nigerian father, Martin Ogazi, 39, has been accused of beating up a rival coach while cheering on his son’s junior football team, Old Bailey court heard today.

The beating allegedly left coach Stewart Collins, nursing a broken nose and two black eyes in a touchline brawl over aggressive tackling.

According to Naijapals: Ogazi said he was set upon by Mr Collins, his wife Claire, and his sister Tracey. He claimed he only threw punches to defend himself.

The alleged attack happened on the touchline of a match between rival under-nine sides Eversley United and Danson Sports FC.

When Ogazi’s son, an Eversley player, committed a foul, Ogazi is said to have shouted ‘give him more of that’ across the pitch.

Mr Collins, the Danson Sports manager, objected and went over to Ogazi to tell him to stop encouraging his son to hurt the opposition.

Mr Collins said he was polite and courteous, but was met with a barrage of punches from the defendant.

Ogazi, who regularly cheers on his son from the sidelines, told the court: ‘At all points in this incident from the approach of Mr Collins to the end, I was acting in self defence.’

He said Collins, who was jabbing his finger at him, was the aggressor, and reacted angrily to him pushing his hand away.

Ogazi said he was then attacked from behind by Collins’ wife and sister, was grabbed round the waist and started swinging his arms to get free.

He said: ‘I was being punched and kicked, and I mostly punched my way out.’

Ogazi is accused of assaulting the two women during the incident, on March 23 last year, as well as attacking another team manager, Steve Ristow, as he tried to break up the fight.

China Warns Philippines Military to Stay Away from Disputed Territory

China has warned Philippine military planes six times to leave disputed areas of the South China Sea and may be “testing the waters” to see if it can establish a no-fly zone in the region, senior Philippine military officials said.

“As we were conducting routine maritime air patrols and flying in international airspace, our air force aircraft were challenged over the radio,” Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez told a Senate hearing in Manila on Thursday.

Lopez, commander of the Philippine Western Command, said the pilots ignored the warnings, replying that they are navigating international space.

While Lopez did not provide a timeframe, another senior Philippine air force official who asked to not be identified told Reuters that the six warnings had come in the past three months.

That official added that China could be “testing the waters” to see if it can enforce an air exclusion zone above the Spratly archipelago of the South China Sea, where multiple countries have overlapping territorial claims.

Recent satellite images show China has made rapid progress in reclaiming land around seven reefs it occupies in the Spratlys, including building what appears to be an airstrip on one of the artificial islands, Reuters reported.

“The Chinese said our planes were in their military security area,” Vice Admiral Lopez told senators.

In late 2013, China imposed an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), in which aircraft are supposed to identify themselves to Chinese authorities, above the East China Sea. The United States and Japan condemned the move.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had every right to set up ADIZs if it so wished. The situation in the South China Sea is stable, she added, and China and Southeast Asian countries want peace there.

“Under these conditions, I think that individuals hyping up an ADIZ, that China possibly wants to set one up in the South China Sea, this obviously has ulterior motives,” she said.

On April 19, a Chinese warship challenged a Philippine air force plane that was approaching Subi Reef, which is part of the Spratlys. The pilot reported hearing the radio message: “Foreign airplane, you are approaching my military security area, please go away quickly in order to avoid misjudgment.”

Lopez said China had expanded the seven reefs it occupies from a few thousand square meters to up to 11 hectares (27 acres) in artificial islands, including two areas close to the Philippine-held Thitu Island, Reuters reported.

China has denied accusations its actions are provocative, and even recently accused the Philippines, Vietnam and others of carrying out illegal building work in the South China Sea.

The US military commander for Asia, Admiral Samuel Locklear, said last month that China could eventually deploy radar and missile systems on its outposts that could be used to enforce an exclusion zone should it move to declare one.

Beijing claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims.

Air Force Boss Explains Why It Took Nigerian Military Five Years To contain Boko Haram

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu, has explained why it took the Nigerian military so long to overcome the Islamic extremists, Boko Haram insurgents.

The Air Force boss explained that before the postponement of the 2015 general elections, the military did not deploy the use of technology to battle the insurgents.

Amosu made this explanation yesterday during a press conference to mark the 51st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force.

He disclosed that the introduction of technology to the war and the assistance of Pakistan, Ukraine and South Africa turned the war in favour of the Nigerian military.

“The extension that we got for the elections was to essentially take advantage of two situations. We have been discussing with our neighbours in trying to secure their support; we got the support in principle just before the election was postponed. Again, we got increased supply of equipment that we needed for fighting.”

Added to the above, he asserted, was the military’s introduction of technological tools to its campaign.

“When I talk of technology, there is what we call Network Enabled Technology (NET). What are the advantages of having network enabled capabilities? We have some limited capability in regard to that. We have the beach craft; it is able to give us effective down streaming so we can actually see the battle, and that’s exactly what we are doing most of the time.

“The Network Enabling Technology is going to really change a lot of things in the Nigerian Air Force. About 10 days ago, when we saw the population coming out of Sambisa Forest, no matter how good your surveillance is, surprises will show up. I personally was surprised to see that population coming out from the forest. But if you have technology, you would have noticed that this population was right there in the forest.

“But when you have the technology, you don’t need to have this sustained long operation; we would have been able to identify the gathering over a period of time and would have been able to bring the operation to its conclusion,” Amosu said.

He said the support was mainly in the provision of training and expendables.

Niger Republic Troops Deport More Than 3,000 Nigeria fishermen and refugees.

The Niger Republic troops have deported more than 3,000 Nigerian fishermen and refugees escaping from Boko Haram, Associated Press has reported.

AP quoted the refugees as saying they were compelled to return to Nigeria after Boko Haram last week attacked an island in Lake Chad.

They also said the soldiers arrived at the fishing village of Lelewa and ordered them to leave. Niger officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Monday, Niger said it was planning a military operation in the area to rout Boko Haram extremists and ordered its citizens to move further inland.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency said it was alerted by Niger and sent trucks to collect the exhausted refugees at the border.

The agency’s director of search and rescue, Charles Otegbabe, registered the new arrivals in Gaidam town in the Northeastern Borno State.

“We thought there would be about 2,000 but we have already registered more than 3,000 and there are still more people coming,” he said.

The refugees said there are hundreds more on the way.

“They didn’t even give us time to collect our clothes. We had to abandon everything,” said Lubabatu Isa, a 21-year-old girl.

Isa and Nura Auwal, another refugee, said about a dozen people died during the three-day walk to the border, including a woman and her newborn twins.

See The bold Woman Who Saved Buhari From Coup Plotters In 1984 - Pic

Internationally acclaimed herbal practitioner, Mrs. Flora Ifenyichukwu Nkemakonam Ilonzo, has recalled how she ‘saved’ President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, from “a well planned coup” when he was military Head of State.

saved

Ilonzo said she was the savior of Buhari in 1984 in Enugu when a coup was planned to eliminate him.  She said she used her power to botch the plot. Ilonzo is today the Director, Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration (CPHA), Awka.

“Buhari would have died in that planned coup in Enugu while in office as a military Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces,” she claimed.

Ilonzo has practiced her trade in both Enugu and Awka for over 30 years, especially on herbal research, health education and in resolving human problems. She has published books, among them, ‘Questions and Answers on Phystomedicine’, ‘Herbs and Your Health’ and ‘Food and your Health’.

Now that Buhari has been democratically elected to govern the country once again, Ilonzo has also re-surfaced to warn him to beware in his actions and inactions.  She warned Buhari to “be vigilant as ever at all times as he presides the affairs of the country” and congratulated him for winning the 2015 Presidential election.  “I warmly felicitate with and congratulate your Excellency on your well deserved victory at the Presidential election. I am thrilled by your emergence as the next civilian President of our dear country.

“Thirty-one years ago, when Your Excellency was the Military Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I foresaw and exposed a plot to assassinate you during an official visit to Anambra State.  “I immediately contacted the authorities for further action and for the postponement of your visit. At that time, General Y.Y. Kure was the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, while Emmanuel Akojie was the Signal Brigade Commander. When your visit commenced at the appropriate time, Your Excellency arrived Enugu Airport and demanded my presence to appreciate my gesture. In your entourage were the former Chief Judge and Attorney General of the Federation, Justice Belgore, and the late Chike Ofordile, respectively.

“Today, as the President-elect, providence has given you yet another opportunity to complete the national assignment you started three decades ago. Your mandate is by no means a gift to be squandered by anyone who is not committed to national rebirth and reconstruction. I advise that you pick your team

for the best results irrespective of ethnic, religious and political cleavages.  “I pray that you replicate the legacy of the Late Singaporean leader Lee Kuan Yew in Nigeria to make this nation a prosperous, proud and respectable entity in the comity of nations; I urge you to restore discipline, morality, excellence in quality of goods and services offered to our nation for the upliftment of our patriotic spirit and common good.  “My word of caution is that you remain as vigilant as ever to keep sycophants at a safe distance. Our unity, security and the reduction of ethno –religious tension should occupy a premier position in your new administration.

Thanks and God bless,’’ Ilonzo said. Ilonzo, an old Anambra State Artist, was known then as Mrs. I. Eze, according to Ogbuefi Charles Onyechi, Amalunweze of Awka, a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Awka who revealed the woman to newsmen in Onitsha. Onyechi also agreed that the President-elect would have been killed in Enugu when he was military Head of State but was saved by Mrs. Ilonzo.

Onyechi showed a book yet to be publicly presented containing the story of how the Igbo woman saved Buhari with vivid account and details.  The book tagged, ‘Peace…the legacy of an Icon of our time,’ captures the roles of Ilonzo, Anyafulugo Enugu-Ukwu na Umunri, Ozouwandu Aguleri Kingdom.  Hear her: “I was in a dream and saw the shooting to death of several Igbo leaders as they lined up to welcome the Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari in 1984.

The visit was still nine days away, so something must be done, and fast too, to forestall the calamity. As a civil servant, I could not approach the Governor directly, but I wrote a letter to the Governor through his Principal Secretary, Mrs. Ossai. I copied the same letter to the Commissioner of Police, the GOC, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander Signal Brigade in Enugu. I undertook to deliver personally that of the Governor, and the GOC 82 Division. In view of my vision, I urged them to defer the visit of the Head of state, emphasising that once I have such a revelation, it surely must take place.

“At the receipt of the Governor’s letter, the

Principal Secretary read it and instructed his staff to call me back. In my presence he told them of the content of the letter and called me names, insinuating that I was one of those women hanging around army barracks running after soldiers. He tore the letter and warned his staff never to allow me inside his office again.

“By the time I got home, my staff who went to deliver copies of the letter had returned, followed by the GOC 82 Div Major General Y.Y Kure. He confirmed the receipt of my letter, and wanted to know what to do. I maintained what I said in the letter — that the visit must be postponed till the bad boys have been fished out and dealt with. Within thirty minutes, the Commissioner of

Police and Brigade Commander also arrived at my 22 Savage Crescent, GRA, Enugu residence, where they met the GOC.

“During my discussions with them, I asked to first of all take inventory of the armoury to determine what was stolen. I also informed them that the blank bullets used for ceremonial occasions had been replaced with live bullets, to enable the plotters kill all those they wanted to kill.

I also confirmed to them the place the stolen ammunition was hidden.

“They left and first of all visited the armoury where it was found that some ammunition were actually missing. They came back and sought my help to locate the missing ammunition. I agreed, but sent them back to collect some gunpowder and sand from the location of the armoury, while I went to collect leaves my grand father, Akunne Onyido, used to trace lost items. I

mixed the leaves and sand and used the gun powder to set it ablaze. When it has been burnt, I collected the ashes and gave them two portions, one to sprinkle around the barracks, I  told them that it would make those involved to confess,

which is better than my revealing their names. Before then, they had arrested  the Armourer, Lt. Anyaka. But I told them he was innocent.

“The following day they sprinkled the powder on the parade ground before the arrival of the soldiers for the

parade. Immediately after, one of the soldiers residing at the Thinkers Corner confessed that he was to kill the Head of State. He named some of his collaborators after which he shot himself. They called another parade to which I was invited. I was there disguised as a groundnut seller. After the GOC’s address, one of the plotters stood up and pointed out his accomplices. He took the GOC, the Signal Brigade Commander, Emmanuel Akoji, to the armoury to demonstrate how they entered the place. He rubbed his back on the wall and the doors opened.

Immediately the powder was rubbed on him and he could not come out the same way. He was arrested. I then took them to where the stolen ammunition were kept, there were all together nine bombs, two cartons of hand grenades, and 12 crates of ammunition, hidden in a bunker.
