FG Opposes Electricity Tariff Reversal, Backs NERC

The Federal Government on Thursday opposed the court ruling that mandated it and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to reverse the 45 per cent increase in power tariffs payable by consumers across the country.

It also commended NERC for appealing the judgement, describing the ruling as a setback that posed a challenge, which had prompted misunderstanding in the sector.

Nuhu Ribadu Formally Returns To APC

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, on Friday returned to the All Progressives Congress.
Mr. Ribadu said in a statement he posted on his Facebook page that he rejoined the party online on Friday, and then hosted officials of the party from his Bako Ward in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Naira Sinks To N375 Per Dollar - The Nation

There was confusion in the market yesterday as the naira slumped to a new low in both the official and parallel markets, exchanging at N292.90 and N375 to the dollar.

The local currency however closed at 292.90 to the dollar on the interbank rate after just one transaction was carried out, with dollar supply drying up and no intervention by the CBN, traders said. Traders had expected the CBN to intervene to ease dollar shortages, but that did not materialise.

Balarabe Musa blasts Buhari over state of the nation

A former Kaduna State governor and national chairman of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Balarabe Musa, has described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government as an “anti-people”.

He made the assertion at a colloquium held by the National Conscience Party(NCP) held in honour of the party’s founder, Gani Fawehinmi, in Akure on Thursday. Mr. Musa, who chaired the occasion themed, The State of the Nation: If Gani Were to Be Alive, argued that “the policies of the federal government, instead of ameliorating the sufferings of the people, have further impoverished and inflicted more pains on the masses”.

Caveat one: Wishful thinking is considered bad, pollyannish, naïve, deluded, etc. Fine. I will plead “guilty” to all of these and boldly proceeded to express some terminal wishful thinking. I will do that because I do believe that it is sometimes important to set aside such otherwise precious things as realism and the so-called “real world” and to unabashedly proclaim that the world we live in is not the world we wished to be living in and that while we might break under the weight of reality, we sill are capable of remembering the ideals we hold dear. And then maybe, our wishes, at least some of them, will come true.

China Hints at Economic Costs After India Deploys Tanks, Troops to Border

After India mobilized tanks to the Chinese border, Beijing has warned that the move could threaten potential investment opportunities.

On Wednesday, reports surfaced that New Delhi deployed nearly 100 Russian-made T-72 tanks to the Chinese border, in the northern region of Ladakh. Indian military officials cite a Chinese buildup on its side of the border as necessitating the move.


PPRA considers introducing tax on petrol, diesel, kerosene and gas

Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) says that taxation of petroleum products like fuel, diesel, kerosene and gas holds a huge revenue potential for Nigeria.

This is contained in a report of the two-day National Revenue Retreat in Kano. According to the Report, PPPRA says the introduction of taxes on petroleum products will supplement the revenue lost due to the fall of oil prices at the international market.

The man snatched a child who was walking on the street with her mum, around Beckleys Estate, Abule Egba, Lagos, jumped on his bike and tried to ride away. He was however unlucky, as the woman raised an alarm and other passersby gave him a hot chase.

When he realized that his game was almost up, he threw the child from the bike, with the hope that his chasers would back off, but they didn't give up and he was eventually caught.

Men of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old father, Joseph Ibanga, for strangling his four-year-old daughter, Gloria Ibanga, to death. He, however, revealed that he carried out the act after eating a meal prepared by his mother. .

Man arrested for impregnating his daughter, procuring abortion for her and defiling a baby

Kennedy Michael, 36, from Akwa Ibom State, has been arrested for allegedly raping his teenage daughter, Maria, and attempting to abort the resulting pregnancy, New Telegraph reports. He was arrested alongside his girlfriend, Ndukwe Ijeoma, for assisting in procuring abortion for the girl.

Land Grabbers To Face 21 Years Jail Term

Illegal land occupants also known as land grabbers will henceforth face 21 years jail term.
This was the law yesterday passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly prohibiting forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties in the state.

According to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, after the Bill had gone through the Third Reading and finally passed by a voice vote of all members present at plenary session, told the acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni, to forward a clean copy of the bill to the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for his assent.

Adeniyi Oyebade Indicted Of Shi'ite Killing By Kaduna Judicial Panel Of Inquiry


The General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army’s 1st Division, Adeniyi Oyebade, a major general, authorized last December’s military operation that massacred at least 347 members of the Shi’a Muslim group in Zaria, and should be prosecuted, a judicial commission of inquiry into the killings, has said in its final report.
The commission of inquiry, set up by the Kaduna State government, indicted Mr. Oyebade and other senior army officers for the attack, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report.
The panel’s report was submitted to Gov. Nasir el-Rufai on Friday, but its details are yet to be made public.

FG Set To Generate Electricity From Uranium

The Federal Government has commenced moves to generate electricity from nuclear materials, particularly through the exploration, exploitation and utilisation of uranium.
