Nigeria is on the right track to eradicate Poliomyelitis (Polio), adhering to a determined and consistent public health endeavour. In what’s been hailed globally as an extraordinary feat, Nigeria managed to lessen the amount of polio cases in the Nation by nearly 90 percent in one single year.

UNICEF’s Chief of Polio Communication, Melissa Corkum, said with this year’s World Polio Day, Nigeria has a great deal to celebrate with regards to the progress towards stopping polio transmission.


“We have made a lot of progress over the last few years and particularly over the past year and a half improving the quality of our campaign and focusing on the high risk areas. But this is the most critical part of the programme and the eyes of the world are on Nigeria to deliver not just a polio-free nation, but a polio-free Africa. Nigeria has its eyes on the prize of elimination of polio – this is the most critical part of the programme, because the stakes are so high.”


After the successful eradication of guinea-worm and Ebola Virus Disease, the progress on stopping Polio is another sign that FG on improving public health in Nigeria is bearing fruit.
