Standards Organization of Nigeria to Carry Out Free Certification for SME Products

In accordance with the agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan to make certain Nigerian products are globally competitive, the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has pledged to carry out the certification of products of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for free. This pledge was created by SON Director General Dr. Joseph Odumodu, while addressing a World Press Conference on the state of standards in Nigeria.

Delivering an address themed, “Made in Nigeria For the World – a Transformational Imperative,” Odumodu noted even though you can find more than 20,000 registered SMEs in the country, most products in the country cannot compete favourably in the global market because of non-conformity to standards. Odumodo said for Nigeria to attain its 2020 goal, products must manage to compete favourably at the entire world stage, noting the continuing future of Nigerian trade is based on the hands of indigenous firms.


He also stated two of SON’s laboratories in Lekki, Lagos were accredited by the United States authority, as the construction of SON’s state of the art laboratory in Ogba section of Lagos is near to completion. Odumodu further stated yet another fifteen laboratories will be constructed across the country to make certain items are duly tested and certified to meet up international standards and to make certain safety of lives of Nigerians.
