Tambuwal: We’ll stop PDP impunity, Rep says

The Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Mr. Samson Osagie, on Monday disclosed that the All Progressives Congress would use all legal means within its reach to check the ‘excesses and impunity’ of the Peoples Democratic Party and its plan to force the Speaker of the house, Aminu Tambuwal, out of office.

Osagie, who told our correspondent that he was a second plaintiff in the suit filed by the APC caucus in the house to stall the plan by the PDP, accused the ruling party of sabotaging the nation’s democracy in “material aspects.”

The Minority Whip, who spoke shortly after returning his nomination form for the 2015 Edo South senatorial election at the party’s secretariat in Benin, said that the country could not continue in the direction of control of the ruling party.

“We must use all legal processes to stop the impunity of the ruling party in this country that has indulged in acts of sabotage of our constitutional democracy in all material respects.

“We cannot continue in the direction that they are trying to take our ship of state. The Speaker has opted for the APC and heavens cannot fall. He remains the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“He is not the Speaker of PDP and his not the Speaker of APC and he is protected by law until a court says so.

“So for me and our party (APC), we need to check their (PDP) excesses, we need to check their impunity.

“I am a second plaintiff in that suit. We are ready to challenge the impunity and illegality that both the police and the PDP have engaged themselves in this matter.

“The All Progressives Congress will seek all legitimate means to check the illegalities that the other party wants to impose into the House of Representatives, the lawmaker explained.

Osagie said that the PDP, APC and Labour Party which made up the 360-member house had no problem, which according to him explained the “peaceful atmosphere” which pervaded the lower chamber on October 28 when the Speaker announced his defection to the opposition party.

He also described the crisis in the lower House as the handiwork of external interference, which he said the APC would bring to an end.

He said, “Between the 360 members of the House of Representatives, APC, PDP, Labour Party, there is no problem. As you can see, the day the Speaker declared for APC, it was in an atmosphere of conviviality among all party members.

“The crises you see are induced from the outside, not among the members of the party. You will be shocked that if we were to convene today, the atmosphere of peace will pervade that chamber and that is why we must seek all legal means to stop their impunity.”
