Herdsman/Farmers Conflict: FG to Establish with 100 million Naira

In a bid to get rid of the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in some parts of the nation, President Goodluck Jonathan is set to approve N100 billion to aid states in establishing modern mini ranches. Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam said it had been among the 15 recommendations his Subcommittee on Grazing Reserves presented to the National Economic Council.

Suswam noted final resolutions will be used about it in subsequent meetings, as the fund if approved, could be given by the Central Bank of Nigeria. He also revealed cattle rearers getting into the nation from neighbouring countries would henceforth be registered to have records of these and help ensure they respect law and order.

The governor said the report highlighted critical issues that must definitely be considered including, struggle for land and water resources by the herdsmen and farmers, uncontrolled influx of nomadic farmers into Nigeria and issues on grazing reserves in the states.
President Jonathan has consistently maintained his administration wouldn't limit conflict-resolution strategies to the utilization of force, rather they'd continue steadily to explore other productive means like dialogue and the provision of necessary infrastructure.
